Before You Send a Crop Photo: A Practical Consulting Inquiry Checklist

A close-up of a damaged leaf is a useful start, but a consulting question becomes easier to review when the image arrives with context. Before sending a crop or garden-plant inquiry, build a small observation packet.

1. Photograph at three scales

Include the surrounding area, the whole plant and a sharp close-up of the affected part. Photograph both leaf surfaces and include a ruler for scale. Keep the original images without filters that change colour.

2. Add a short timeline

Write down the plant or crop name, location, when the change first appeared and whether it affects one plant, a patch or a wider area. Note recent weather, watering and management changes. Label observations as observations rather than assuming a cause.

3. Make your question specific

For example: “These changes appeared on several plants this week. Which additional observations or samples would help a qualified adviser assess the problem?” This gives the reviewer a clear next step without asking a photograph to prove a diagnosis.

The University of Maryland Extension recommends focused images, multiple views and contextual information. Its photo submission guide provides additional examples. Photographs may still need to be followed by samples or an on-site assessment.
